Alex Toohey has emerged as one of the most highly touted Australian prospects to emerge from the Centre of Excellence since former Next Star Josh Giddey, and after initially committing to play for collegiate powerhouse Gonzaga in the NCAA, the Canberra-born forward has elected to remain close to home and take his talents to the two-time reigning champion Sydney Kings.

After initially being touted as a likely two-year Next Star prospect, Toohey started the NBL24 season on fire and started for the Kings in place of injured import forward DJ Hogg.

The Centre of Excellence graduate has impressed playing in the power forward position in his early NBL career, but with his NBA future likely coming at the small forward spot, Toohey has showcased a versatility and ability to play above his size when needed.

Toohey said: "I’m super excited to be joining the Next Stars program and can’t wait to compete at the highest level in Australia, and to develop as a player. I know it will take a lot of hard work and commitment but the Next Stars program is a proven path."

"He's a winner and a gamer. He may not wow you with his athleticism or strength, but he’s stronger than he looks, more athletic than you give him credit for, and he’s just going to figure it out. He’s going to succeed in whatever position he’s in. He’s a good teammate, he’s super coachable and he’s versatile … you see he’s able to pick up the ball and go the length of the court, simple crossovers to get himself to the bucket. Nothing fancy, just fundamental and solid. He doesn’t turn the ball over, makes good decisions. He’s the type of player you need to win in games.”

"Alex is poised to be the next big thing in Australian basketball and his signing is another indication of how strong and respected our Next Stars program is. Basketball has never been stronger in Australia and Alex represents the next wave of exciting talent coming through. He possesses a versatile skillset and will be an instant difference maker on both ends of the floor for the Kings."

NBL Commissioner

"Alex is an elite young talent and someone we have been recruiting for a while. There is a collective focus to continue developing Alex’s game, allowing him the best opportunity to achieve his NBA aspirations – at the same time, we feel he will have an immediate impact on court. We are intentional with our signings, and Alex fills a lot of needs for us. We strongly believe he will contribute to winning."
